The transformation of John McCain

(2/20/08) Looking to November, the campaign of John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, now shifts its focus and message.

Top aides met recently with McCain to plan his transformation from primary-season candidate to Republican nominee.

They debated the dynamics of a race against either Sen. Hillary Clinton or Sen. Barack Obama, the funding necessary for victory, the political climate likely to exist six months from now and the shape of the organization they will need to quickly assemble.

Plans call for a much larger staff, outreach to more potential donors, offices in the battleground states and a revised campaign message that challenges the Democratic vision for change in Washington.

McCain's top five strategists will form the nucleus of the senator's general election campaign.

But the same team will have to grow to include some of the senator's rivals and critics - of whom there are many on Capital Hill.
